A Promise of Fire by Amanda Bouchet

The Kingmaker is a person with the magical ability to tell the difference between the truth and lies. A Kingmaker is born once every 500 years and at that time, everyone wants to claim them for their own schemes. Between magical Fisa, divided Tarva, and magicless Sinta, all of the royalty of the three kingdoms wish for power and start searching for the rumored Kingmaker.

Catalia, our main character, is the current Kingmaker and she is in hiding within a traveling circus. Hiding from her mother, from royalty, and anyone else who would use her. Suddenly this mundane, barbarian of a man pops into her life and kidnaps her. How does he know her secret which she has fought so hard to hide? And why does he attract her so? Griffin is also unwittingly desiring the spitfire, Cat. He quickly learns that he may want this smart, sassy, and beautiful woman, for more than just her power. But her abilities are definitely an added benefit.

It doesn't take long for these two to realize that they are going to need much more help from each other than they will ever care to admit. They fight against one another and struggle with their feelings, but that doesn't last for long. Cat and Griffin appear destined to work together and seek out the ghosts and demons of her past, no matter how she dreads it. For Cat's destiny wasn't decided by the fates but by the gods and goddesses themselves.
